Storage Tips – How to Organize your Storage Locker
Keeping your storage unit organized is the best way to improve your storage experience, no matter what size storage locker you are renting. We’ve put together the top 10 tips to keep your storage space organized and ensure all of your belongings are safely stored.
TIP #1: LEAVE SPACE
One of the worst experiences we hear from our customers is when they are looking for something and realize that the item is at the back of a fully packed storage locker. Regardless if you’re just doing a quick move in/move out, we recommend ensuring you have a clear pathway to all of your boxes and belongings.
TIP #2: PUT STUFF YOU NEED TO ACCESS IN FRONT
If you need to access a particular item with some regularity, store it at the front of your storage locker.
TIP #3: USE THE RIGHT SIZED BOX
Remember the last time you picked up that large box, only to realize it contained 50 kilograms of books?
Having the right sized box is crucial to effectively storing your belongings. Books should be in small, packable boxes that are easy to move and make a strong base. Pack fragile items, such as plates and glasses, in small boxes as well, then store these on the top of your box stack. Folded clothes and other light but sturdy items go great in large boxes and make up the mid section or base of your box stack.
TIP #4: AVOID PACKING IN PLASTIC BAGS
Plastic bags always seem like a great idea when you’re packing. You can easily cram clothes into them and they hold a lot. However, they’re awful in storage lockers. Their shape and softness makes them nearly impossible to stack, they rip, tear and spill. And sealed plastic traps in moisture and prevents your belongings from breathing, inviting mildew.
TIP #5: PLASTIC TUBS
Plastic tubs are now reasonably priced and a great investment tool when it comes to storage and making sure that your contents are properly protected from moisture, insects, and direct light.
TIP #6: PRACTICE GOOD VENTILATION
One of the most chronically under-thought-about areas of a storage locker is the space between your boxes and the wall. Leaving a small space allows airflow and ventilation that keeps your belongings dry and crisp.
TIP #7: WRAP IT UP
If you’re storing expensive furniture or hard to replace items, be sure to wrap them in protective plastic or cloth in order to prevent scratches and scuffs.
TIP #8: DISASSEMBLE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
It may seem like a chore, but don’t store a bed from whole, if you don’t have to. Take everything apart and stack them together. This will ensure minimal breakage and decrease the footprint it will take in your storage locker.
TIP #9: LABEL, LABEL AND THEN LABEL SOME MORE
There’s nothing worse than finding that your glassware has had two boxes of books placed on top of it. Or was stacked upside down. Make sure to label which end is up, what the contents are. Bonus for movers: this lets you know what boxes should be placed in what room.
TIP #10: NEVER STORE GLASS FLAT
This seems obvious, but is constantly ignored. Panes of glass, such as mirrors or picture frames, should be stored on their side and not have items placed upon them. Otherwise they have a tendency to break…
